Can We Find Hope in Resisting this War Making Empire?
Featuring Susan S. Crane
Susan has been a war tax resister and war resister most of her life. She has taught children in Ukiah, California as a teacher and director of a child care program. While raising her own children, she questioned how we, as a nation, could kill children in other countries by our war making. Those children, she believes, are as precious as her own. She has been part of several Plowshares actions, where small communities of people begin to enflesh the words of the prophet Isaiah to “beat swords into plowshares.” Along with others, Susan has begun to convert our weapons to instruments useful for human life. For these actions, Susan has spent more than six years in prison.
At the moment, Susan lives at the Redwood City Catholic Worker house. Catholic Worker Center volunteers see people who are homeless, hungry, and without medical care. How is it that in this rich country, people are so poor and in so much need? Catholic workers conclude that the resources and money of our country is being used for war making, that the money can only be spent once, and that we need to value people and the earth more than profit. Join us to hear and discuss about what creates hope, about what we can do to bring about a nonviolent collapse of war making Empire that we live in.
