Time to Unite Again for Peace
I am sure that as you read these lines you would agree with me that the world needs more than a little help when it comes to peace on the planet. I am usually very optimistic when it comes to trying diplomacy rather than weapons, but from what I see and read about the Middle East, Ukraine, Russia, Africa, United States, it seems that diplomatic efforts are not having any meaningful effects lately. We recently heard that there is a U.S. senator who says that to solve the Ukrainian problem we need to supply the Ukrainian people with weapons. Another senator sometime ago recommended supplying weapons to Syrian fighters. I find that a great example of the inability to find diplomatic solutions, a good example that for some the military alternative remains the most direct way to solve conflicts in the world, and, unfortunately, an example of the quality of leaders that we sometimes elect to govern the country; just make sure that he or she does not become a member of the Foreign Relations Committee. So, we now have another reason to advocate for peace, another good reason to write your legislator and demand that stronger diplomatic efforts be conducted to help resolve the Ukrainian conflict. President Obama, President Putin, President Petro Poroshenko and Secretary General Ban Ki-moon should meet in Geneva not simply to discuss the subject, but to actually find a diplomatic solution and sign an agreement to end that potentially more than serious conflict. These leaders should demonstrate their commitment to diplomacy and Peace and not wait until the crisis escalate and more innocent people die. It seems that solutions to human conditions and conflicts are only discovered when a big crisis occur; let us not wait until a full scale war begins to work for Peace again. That will be too late. Celebrate Labor Day in a peaceful country.
